High above Ventura County, as the morning sun rose over the rolling hills of Camarillo, golfers gathered at Spanish Hills Club for a tournament unlike any other.
Golf carts lined the staging area. Players warmed up on the practice range. Volunteers exchanged warm greetings as champions would eventually be crowned. But at first glance—and far beyond the leaderboard—this was not a typical golf tournament.
For many participants, simply arriving at the first tee represented a triumph over adversity. This day was a celebration of resilience, recovery, and the life-changing power of golf.
What is Recovery Shot?
Recovery Shot is a Southern California non-profit therapeutic golf organization dedicated to using the game of golf to bring people together and open doors to healing.
The organization serves a wide and vibrant community:
-
Veterans and First Responders seeking camaraderie and connection after service.
-
Individuals recovering from stroke, heart attack, illness, injury, or trauma.
-
Adaptive athletes and people with special needs or abilities (including kids and adults with autism).
-
Underserved youth discovering the lifelong benefits of the game.
The mission is rooted in a simple belief: golf can be a powerful vehicle for healing, confidence, connection, and personal growth.
A Second Chance Through Golf
In the sport of golf, a "recovery shot" is the shot that gives a player an opportunity to overcome an obstacle and keep moving forward on the fairway.
The organization adopted that exact concept as the foundation of its mission. Recovery Shot provides free golf opportunities and therapeutic golf experiences through clinics, on-course play, and community support.
What makes the program unique is that the focus is never solely on perfecting a golf swing. The game simply provides the environment—the real impact is found in the friendships formed, the encouragement shared, and the confidence rebuilt one step at a time.
"For many participants, the opportunity to spend a day on the golf course is about reclaiming something that illness, injury, or life circumstances may have taken away. It is about proving to themselves that they still belong in the game."
Born From Personal Experience: Dennis’s Story
Recovery Shot wasn’t created in a corporate boardroom; it was born on the fairways out of real-life recovery.
After suffering two major strokes, founder Dennis was in critical shape, unable to move, and faced a long road back. That’s when a close friend stepped in with a life-changing offer: Move to Ventura County, and I’ll take you out on the golf course and get you back going.
"All I could do was ride in the cart in those days. But then after a few months, I started putting a little bit... then after another few months, I started chipping. Then he said, 'Why don’t you try to swing the golf club?'
I hit the ball—not very far, I can't hit it like I used to—but now after all these years, I'm playing 18 holes again. Golf has really been my salvation. It's beautiful to be on the golf course—green grass, fresh air, a little exercise, and hanging out with your buddies. What's better than that?"
— Dennis, Recovery Shot Founder
Finding Purpose & Camaraderie on the Fairway
Each golfer arrives at Recovery Shot with a different story, different obstacles overcome, and unique challenges. Yet all share a common understanding of what the game provides beyond competition.
One veteran shared how overcoming initial hesitation transformed his recovery journey:
-
Overcoming Hesitation: After hearing about the program, he delayed reaching out for nearly two years. The program director persistently reached out with gentle encouragement until he finally stepped onto the course.
-
Catching the "Bug": “When I went out, I finally caught the bug. In my recovery, I started meeting other veterans, and it was just like being back in the service again. I just fell in love with golf.”
-
What Golf Gave Back: Golf restored a sense of self-worth, belonging, and discipline—reminding him of being taught by sergeants in the military, listening to those who came before, taking responsibility, and simply enjoying life again.
The Science & Healing Power of the Game
The foundation of Recovery Shot is supported by a growing recognition of golf’s physical, emotional, and neurological benefits:
| Physical & Neurological Benefits | Social & Emotional Benefits |
| Low-impact physical exercise that builds mobility and balance. | Social engagement and connection with fellow participants and mentors. |
| Neuroplasticity support: Research shows golf aids neurological recovery by engaging the brain’s ability to adapt and relearn motor skills. | Rebuilding self-worth by focusing on possibilities rather than physical limitations. |
| Outdoor therapeutic environment with fresh air, green spaces, and natural sunlight. | A supportive community where physical and social barriers naturally fade away. |
A Community Effort: Spanish Hills Club
Events like the Recovery Shot Tournament depend heavily on local support and inclusive facilities. Spanish Hills Club provided a breathtaking setting overlooking Ventura County, opening its doors to a program that reflects golf's most enduring values: perseverance, respect, friendship, and inclusion.
Throughout the day, high-fives followed solid tee shots, smiles accompanied long putts, and meaningful conversations flowed between players who understood both the hardship and triumph of recovery.
The partnership between Spanish Hills and Recovery Shot serves as a powerful reminder of how community facilities can help demonstrate that golf is one of the most welcoming, impactful activities available to anyone facing life’s challenges.
Why These Stories Matter
At GreenSide News, our mission is to tell the stories that exist beyond tournament results and championship trophies. The true heartbeat of golf is found in the people who use the game to build community and overcome adversity.
As the final groups made their way toward the clubhouse at Spanish Hills, the scores recorded that day were quickly secondary. The lasting legacy of the tournament lives in the friendships, encouragement, and inspiration shared across the fairways.
For the golfers who gathered in Camarillo, the most important shot wasn’t the longest drive or the winning putt—it was simply the opportunity to take another shot at life.
