Brackets Busted: Chaos and Command Performances Shake Up Round of 64

The Match Play bracket at the 2026 Long Beach Golf Festival delivered a full day of high-stakes drama as the original field of 64 was slashed exactly in half. By the time the final putts dropped on Saturday evening at El Dorado Park Golf Course, 32 players had punched their tickets to the next round, while the other 32 were left wondering what could have been.

El Dorado Park played beautifully for the event—boasting firm, true greens and pristine, well-kept fairways. It provided a picture-perfect but demanding stage for a deeply talented mix of local amateur standouts, hungry collegiate players, and top-tier high school prospects trading blows across the ropes.

The Dominant Duels: Cruising to the Round of 32

While match play is famous for coming down to the wire, a few players completely refused to let their opponents hang around, putting on absolute clinics early in the day:

  • Ryan Arnold set a blistering tone, relentless execution allowing him to close out his match early with a commanding 6 & 5 victory.

  • Seth Thao matched that exact level of dominance, dismantling his matchup to walk away with his own swift 6 & 5win.

  • Alex Lee stayed locked in from the opening tee shot, never letting off the gas to secure a convincing 5 Up victory.

Meanwhile, Brian Ghim and Tom Yu relied on steady, mistake-free golf to systematically wear down their opponents, both grinding out solid 2 Up victories to advance.

The Nail-Biters: Survival on the 18th Hole

On the flip side of the blowout victories stood the grinders—players who had to fight tooth and nail until the very last green.

The most dramatic survival story belonged to Michael Padilla, who clawed through an absolute dogfight to prevail 1 Up. Qualifying medalist Enzo Lee also faced heavy resistance but relied on critical momentum shifts to eventually close things out with a gritty 3 & 2 win.

In a bizarre turn of events, Giovanni Fontana’s match came to an abrupt end via disqualification, advancing his opponent per the official tournament rules and serving as a stark reminder of how quickly things can change in competitive tournament play.

The Atmosphere Behind the Scenes

The energy surrounding the course was electric. Galleries tightly tracked the pivotal holes, while caddies and coaches nervously paced the ropes as momentum swung back and forth like a pendulum.

Our production team’s camera crews caught every bit of the action. The footage captured everything a tournament desk could ask for: clutch par-saves, dramatic birdie runs, and the raw human emotion that makes match play the most compelling format in sports.

Players to Watch Moving Forward

As the tournament shifts directly into the hyper-competitive Round of 32, the storylines are taking shape. Keep a close eye on these two distinct groups of players:

  • The Powerhouse Surge: Arnold, Thao, and A. Lee are carrying massive confidence following their blowout wins. If they maintain this rhythm, they will be incredibly tough to beat.

  • The Battle-Tested Grinders: Padilla, E. Lee, and Levi Reilly have already proven they can survive high-pressure, single-shot margins. Match play deeply rewards momentum, and these guys are officially comfortable in the trenches.

Green Side News will continue live coverage through the weekend with match previews, video highlights from today’s footage, and exclusive post-match interviews.
