The Ultimate Roadmap to Ventura County Junior Golf: Programs, Camps, & Leagues

By: Green Side News- Ventura Edition, Clint Wood

Share

On any given Tuesday morning at Olivas Links, you can witness the full lifecycle of Southern California youth golf playing out on a single patch of turf.

On one end of the practice range, a 9-year-old grips a mid-iron for the very first time. Her stance is a little too wide and her elbows are stiff, but her coach is patient, calling out steady encouragement as she sends a ball skittering low and true across the grass. A few stations down, a focused 16-year-old in a tournament polo is quietly working through a structured pre-round routine, preparing to tee off in a high-stakes local championship.

Two golfers, miles apart in experience, are sharing the same Southern California sun and the same welcoming facility. It is a snapshot of an incredibly robust, local junior golf pipeline.

The depth of this infrastructure is no accident. It reflects decades of parallel—and increasingly collaborative—investment by local PGA professionals, nonprofit leaders, course operators, and dedicated parent volunteers. This comprehensive guide maps out every verified junior golf program, league, camp, and competitive pathway available across Ventura County as of May 2026.

1. The Competitive Heart: Ventura County Junior Golf Association (VCJGA)

Founded in 1967, the VCJGA is the absolute heartbeat of competitive youth golf along the Central Coast. As a premier non-profit organization, it has spent nearly six decades providing players ages 7 to 18 with a structured environment to learn USGA rules, build integrity, and test their skills in high-level tournament play.

The association meets players at their current skill level by operating two distinct competitive tracks:

  • The Main Tour: Features full championship-format stroke play events divided into the 18U Championship Division (18 or 36 holes), the 13U Middle School Division (18 or 36 holes), and the 11U Elementary Division (9 holes).

  • The Mini-Tour (Central Coast Jr. Series / CCJS): Provides developing players with crucial competitive repetitions in a slightly lower-stakes environment across regional layouts.

To make the game more inclusive, the VCJGA recently lowered its minimum participation age to 7. The 11U division now utilizes optional caddies to help young players maintain the pace of play, and enforces a strict 10-stroke maximum per hole to keep the environment developmental, low-pressure, and fun.

The Tournament Calendar

The tournament season spans from early September through late July, stopping at Ventura County’s finest public tracks. Rankings in qualifying divisions count toward both the Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS) and the Global Junior Golf Rankings (GJGR), creating direct currency for collegiate scouting.

  • Sept 6–7: Kickoff Jr. Championship at Buenaventura / Olivas Links

  • Sept 27–28: Ojai Valley Jr. Championship at Ojai Valley Inn & Resort

  • Oct 25–26: 19th Gold Coast Acura Championship at River Ridge (Vineyard)

  • Dec 6–7: 50th Ventura City Jr. Championship at Olivas Links

  • Feb 21–22: 52nd Foreward Golf Championship at River Ridge (Lakes)

  • Mar 21–22: 49th Andria's Seafood Classic at Olivas Links

  • Apr 25–26: 28th McGillvray Construction Classic at Sterling Hills

  • May 23–24: 46th Ventura Orthopedics Open at Camarillo Springs

  • June 15–16: 60th Founder's Cup at Sterling Hills

  • June 29–30: 4th Fit4Golf Jr. Championship at Los Robles Greens

  • July 27–28: 58th VCJGA County Jr. Championship at Wood Ranch Golf Club

Get Involved: Tournament entry fees range from $100 to $250 based on membership status and division. Tournament Director Zack King manages all registrations and division placements. For eligibility questions or to volunteer as a scoring official, contact him directly at zack@vcjga.com.

2. Character & First Swings: First Tee – Central Coast

For children stepping onto the grass for the first time, golf is often introduced not with a scorecard, but with a life lesson. First Tee – Central Coast is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit youth development organization that uses golf to instill character, resilience, self-confidence, and critical goal-setting.

Serving more than 2,000 young people annually across 13 course locations stretching from Camarillo up to Paso Robles, it represents the most accessible entry point for local families. All clubs and training equipment are provided free of charge.

  • On the Golf Course Program: Offers 8-week seasonal sessions (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall) blending fundamental swing mechanics with First Tee’s Five Key Commitments: Pursuing Goals, Growing through Challenge, Collaborating with Others, Building Positive Self-Identity, and Using Good Judgement.

  • School & Community Programs: Brings a specialized golf curriculum directly into school physical education classes, YMCAs, and after-school Boys & Girls Clubs to meet kids exactly where they are.

While Camarillo currently serves as the southernmost anchor of the chapter's active territory, First Tee has announced plans to expand into additional Ventura County courses later this year. Summer 2026 registration is open now, and Fall registration opens on August 1. Financial assistance is heavily subsidized and operated on a sliding-scale fee model.

3. Summer Track: National PGA Junior Golf Camps

Every summer, the coastal public practice facilities at Olivas Links and Buenaventura Golf Course transform into full, PGA-certified summer camps. Led by Camp Director Rob Tovias, PGA—a Class A member of the PGA of America and UCSB graduate with over 20 years of competitive experience—these camps maintain an intimate 6:1 student-to-instructor ratio.

Camps are meticulously structured into two formats to prevent beginners and elite players from crossing paths in the wrong environment:

  • Half-Day Camps: Focused purely on basic fundamentals—grip, posture, alignment, putting, chipping, pitching, and basic etiquette. Built for true beginners and intermediate rookies.

  • Full-Day Camps: Takes intermediate to advanced junior players out on the regulation course to learn advanced course management, shot selection strategy, and rules under real playing conditions. Lunch is provided for all full-day campers.

Registration Highlight: The upcoming Summer 2026 Full Day Camp at Olivas Links is scheduled for July 13–16 (Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM). The cost is $495, plus a $30 annual registration fee, open to kids ages 6 to 15.

4. Elite Tech & Training: All Systems Golf Academy (ASG)

For juniors looking to refine their technique through elite private coaching and cutting-edge data analysis, All Systems Golf (ASG) at Sterling Hills Golf Club in Camarillo stands as the county's premier training hub.

Independently owned and operated at a public facility, ASG provides an extraordinary roster of top-tier talent that is incredibly rare for a regional public academy:

  • Steve Vigiano, PGA Master Professional: Holds the highest credential awarded by the PGA of America—an honor achieved by less than 1% of all golf professionals. He brings 34 years of coaching experience focused on keeping foundational mechanics clear and personal.

  • Lee Harlow, PGA Life Member: Offers a deep reservoir of competitive tournament knowledge and institutional instructional expertise.

  • Bob E. Smith: A former PGA Tour Professional who provides invaluable insights for elite junior players preparing for college recruitment or professional pathways.

The ASG "Evaluate–Plan–Improve" Framework

ASG bypasses traditional "one-size-fits-all" instruction by diagnosing a player's exact athletic capability through a multi-step digital evaluation:

  1. Game Evaluation: Measures learning style, physical biology, and swing mechanics.

  2. Identify "Golf DNA": Maps precise technical flaws and movement strengths.

  3. Personalized Roadmap: Develops customized tournament practice schedules.

  4. On-Course Playing Lessons: 9-hole strategic coaching side-by-side on the fairways.

Pro Tip: First-time junior visitors of any age can attend a completely complimentary ASG Free Clinic at Sterling Hills before committing to any formal package or private lesson block.

5. Course-Based Clinics & Social Team Formats

Several local public tracks offer individual, facility-direct junior programs designed to build an affordable, low-pressure foundation.

Los Robles Greens Junior Camps (Thousand Oaks)

Managed by Arcis Golf, this beautiful, oak-lined Thousand Oaks course hosts camps for kids ages 6 to 14. Operating at a strict 8:1 student-to-supervisor ratio, the program weaves standard swing instructions into interactive field games and friendly team competitions. Clubs are provided free of charge, and a parent waiver is required at sign-up. Contact: (805) 495-6421.

Tom Barber Golf Center (Moorpark)

Located right next to Tierra Rejada Golf Club, this standalone practice center features an expansive driving range, dedicated short-game areas, and large putting greens. It provides an ideal learning ground for multi-week junior lesson series, allowing kids to build muscle memory and repetition before making the leap to a regulation golf course. Contact: (805) 532-8478.

Team Play: PGA Jr. League

For kids who thrive in a social, team-centric atmosphere, the PGA Jr. League flips individual golf on its head. Boys and girls are grouped into local teams (organized into 9U, 13U, and 17U divisions), wear numbered jerseys, and compete in a low-stress scramble format. This structure mirrors the camaraderie of Little League or youth soccer. Programs are led by local PGA pros, and financial scholarships are available to cover registration costs. Parents can find local teams using the national program finder at pga.com/juniorleague.

6. The Prep Pipeline: CIF High School Golf

For advanced junior golfers, the local high school competitive landscape represents the ultimate proving ground. Governing the region's top amateur talent, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section programs match up every spring in intense league play and regional championships.

No school highlights the competitive ceiling of Ventura County prep golf better than St. Bonaventure Catholic High School in Ventura. Led by Head Coach Robert Sierra, the Seraphs captured the 2026 CIF Championship, hot on the heels of their 2025 title, adding to a legacy that includes more than a dozen league crowns dating back to 1971. St. Bonaventure has become an elite recruiting pipeline for collegiate programs across the country.

A strong network of high schools fields highly competitive varsity squads across the county, including:

  • Simi Valley High School: The 2025–26 squad turned heads with an incredible 9-1 regular-season league record.

  • Camarillo High School

  • Moorpark High School

  • Thousand Oaks High School

  • Oak Park High School

  • Royal High School

Matches rotate through local public tracks like Sinaloa Golf Course, Simi Hills, Los Robles Greens, and Sterling Hills—beautifully connecting the prep scene directly to the public golf infrastructure that supports it.

To turn high school success into collegiate golf opportunities, parents and junior athletes are highly encouraged to pair their VCJGA tournament scores with recruiting profiles on platforms like NCSA College Recruiting. College coaches rely heavily on Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS) and Global Junior Golf Rankings (GJGR) data to hand out collegiate scholarships.

How to Choose the Right Path for Your Child

Just Starting Out (Ages 6–10)

  • First Tee Seasonal Sessions: Best for building character and a love for the game without the pressure of a score.

  • PGA Half-Day Summer Camps: Perfect for learning proper mechanics early on.

  • VCJGA 11U Mini-Tour: Introduces real tournament rules with optional caddies and a 10-stroke maximum per hole.

Building a Foundation (Ages 10–14)

  • VCJGA 13U Middle School Division: Designed for young players ready for competitive stroke play.

  • PGA Team Jr. League: Keeps the social aspect alive through friendly scramble formats.

  • All Systems Golf Evaluation: Diagnoses mechanical shifts and sets a long-term roadmap.

Competitive Development (Ages 14–18)

  • VCJGA 18U Championship Tour: Provides critical tournament exposure recognized by college scouts.

  • CIF High School Varsity: Offers the irreplaceable experience of playing for your school and community.

  • ASG 9-Hole Playing Lessons: Refines course management strategy live on the fairways with elite instruction.

Ventura County’s junior golf ecosystem provides an elite, step-by-step pathway that is incredibly rare to find within a single county public network. A child can take her very first swing at a First Tee clinic in Camarillo, cut her teeth on the VCJGA Mini-Tour as an 11-year-old, perfect her swing path via advanced video tracking at Sterling Hills, play for a decorated CIF title at St. Bonaventure, and earn a collegiate athletic scholarship—all without ever leaving the county.
